An exploration of the charcoal medium. A Black woman peers through a torn and dismantled paper mask while their chin rests on a rippling table. Shadows envelop their face, yet their eyes tell a story.

legalized slavery
adobe illustrator || advocacy poster
18"x24"
There is a misconception that the 13th Amendment truly freed the Black mind, soul, and body. In reality, slavery was made illegal in the United States unless circumstances of criminal punishment are present. The Prison Industrial Complex is evidence.

seeing through the pain
adobe photoshop || animated GIF
As an extended metaphor of my surreal collage “Ask Later,” “Seeing Through the Pain” touches on the desensitization of violence on Black bodies to the point where even I feel hurt, yet I have to keep pushing through life—the “third eye” peers through the wound, seeking closure for the Black community.

ask later
adobe photoshop || surreal collage
8"x11"
This is a surreal depiction of brutality on Black bodies in society. It draws from historical perceptions and prejudices towards Black people, specifically the dehumanization of Black people. In encounters with Police and vigilantes, Black people have been perceived as threats, leading to violence, the prominent response, and Black voices being silenced (in death). Even in courtrooms, Black people are dehumanized to justify violent actions against them, even when no threat was present and they sustained blatant injuries.
Black people are human and should be treated and viewed as such in society.

Lift Ọmọ Mi
acrylic on canvas
16"x20"
“Lift Ọmọ Mi” is a phrase of English and Yorùbá translated to mean “Lift My Child” as an ode to the Black National Anthem ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing.’ I am a Black artist that resonates and connects deeply with their African ancestral heritage. I wanted to create a piece that displayed the hardships, fates, and elongated oppressive history Black people have experienced, yet also illustrated the resilience, support, and ambition of the Black community as a part of their DNA to combat all they face. The waves of various hues that resemble hands pushing the Black girl up represent the souls of many ancestors who watch over and support the living generation of Black people. Through transgressions, Black people have still broken through the surface of the water to lay out the next foundation for future generations time and time again; challenges are encountered with more persistence, more resistance, and everlasting knowledge of our truths, and sentiments of our ancestors’ spirits.
